Lord Chandraprabha, the 8th Tirthankar
Chandraprabha is the eighth Jain tirthankara of the present avasarpini time cycle. His complexion is white and symbol is crescent moon. The chaitya tree under which he got omniscience is Naga.
Chandraprabha in his previous incarnation was king Padma of Manglavati town of Dhatkikhand, in Bharatvarsha. His practice of rigorous penances and austerities in a number of life cycles had exalted his soul to born as the next tirthankara. Chandraprabha was born in Chandrapuri town on the thirteenth day of the dark half of moon in the month of Paush. His father was king Mahasen and mother queen Sulakshana. During her pregnancy, the queen had a desire to drink the glowing streak of moonlight. This resulted the moon like glow in the new born child and so the parents decided his name to be Chandraprabha. In his childhood days, he was kind, patient and courageous and everybody used to love him. When he became young, he got married and later on took charge of the kingdom. Chandraprabha ruled wisely for long time. One day, during prayer, he had the feeling that he should detach himself from the social arena and embrace ascetism. After severe penance and austerity, he attained omniscience within three months. He taught people the tenets of Jain philosophy, of compassion, non-violence, right conduct and the objective of life. He attained nirvana at his old age at Sammed Shikhar together with a thousand monks by engaging himself in immovable meditation and fasting for a month.p
The Yaksha Vijaya Dev, was his male messenger deity and Jwalamalini Devi became the female messenger deity. With them, Lord Chandraprabha moved from one place to other as a part of mission to improve the life of people by following Jain path of spiritualism.
